NaNoWriMo/Extra Life

November 1, 2013 ♥ Posted in: Journal, Nerd Topics, Writing by Kristina Horner

Hello blog readers!

Today is one of the craziest days of the year and of course, because fate is cruel – I’m a big pile of sniffling, achey congestion. So even though tomorrow I plan to play 25 hours straight hours of video games to raise money for Seattle Children’s Hospital, and it’s the start of my month-long novel writing marathon… the only thing I’m working toward today is seeing if it’s possible to use an entire box of Kleenex in a single sitting.

Currently I’m winning.

I’m also currently sitting at 315 words on my NaNoWriMo novel, because I’m a boss. And by “boss” I mean “really disappointed that the first year I’m finally not hungover from post Halloween shenanigans, my head feels like it’s going to explode anyway”.

Anyway, every word I type here is both taking up energy I don’t have and keeping me away from working on my word count (…or napping) so I’ll make this short and sweet.

1. If you interested at all in Extra Life, the gaming marathon to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network, you can check out our live stream starting at 8am on November 2nd and going until 8am the following day. We have a whole list of activities planned that you can read about here, and if you feel sufficiently moved, you can also make a donation here. It’s for the kids. ๐Ÿ™‚

2. If there’s any part of you that ever even once thought “NaNoWriMo sounds like fun…” today is your day. Just start. Start writing and see where it takes you. Finally give yourself the gift of time and focus and just start. Sign up on NaNoWriMo.org and add me as a writing buddy!

And if you want to send any good, healing thoughts my way… that would be much appreciated. I’m quite tired of this cold and would like to get on with all the marathoning I have planned for this month.

Let me know what you’re writing about for NaNoWriMo this month in the comments. I love hearing what other people are doing! And good luck!

I’m going to come to as much of Extra Life as I can, between noveling and working on a video project for school, but I am so happy that you guys are doing it again! Children’s Miracle Network is a great organization, I am actually participating in a CMN Dance Marathon next weekend at my college (Temple University), so I might be pimping it out in the chat!

Please do, that’s awesome!

Hi Kristina! I’m quite jealous of your not-being-hungover-ness…though sorry to hear about the cold! But hey, at least not both, right?
For Nano I’m writing a novel called “Experience and Gold” and it’s basically following the lives of a college D&D group. I’ve decided the tagline is “The Loves, Losses, and Boss Fights of A Dungeons and Dragons Party”. I’m pretty psyched, though my word count is doing a poor job reflecting that!

That sounds seriously awesome. Good luck!

Kristina, you can do it! ๐Ÿ™‚ This is my first year of NaNoWriMo and I know I will not have 50,000 words by the end of the month but I really think you will. Go for it, as every year, go for it ๐Ÿ™‚

Feel better, Kristina! I woke up to your NaNoWriMo song this morning and I’m at 1,457 words so far. This is my first NaNo and I want to thank you for all of your NaNo vlogs and posts, without them I wouldn’t have even tried this year. <3 Lucy

Last year, a cold killed my word count the first week, so I’m sending healing vibes your way. Considered not doing nanowrimo this year, since I’ve tried three years and never won, but I suppose there is a first time for everything. Can’t write until I get home from work, and I don’t really know what I wanna write, but I’m going to go for it.

Kayla says:

Get well soon!

I’m trying to do NaNoWriMo this year but so far it is not going great. Hopefully my brain will kick in tomorrow.

Molly says:

I’m planning on writing about a girl who lives in an iPad! Haven’t been able to actually start the novel yet though, as I’ve been trying to make progress reading a 400 page novel in French while also sick. :/ definitely understand your pain of trying to juggle multiple marathons while feeling terrible! Good luck!! <3

I added you as a buddy, and I’m up to 560 words so far! ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m writing a science fiction story taking place in the modern day on a fictional university campus in Wisconsin. Main characters are a maintenance engineer, and a female professor with two doctorates. That’s all I’ll say for now.

Eat some chicken soup and pop a vitamin C, you’ll be right as rain! Also, thank you for inspiring me to do Nanowrimo this year. I’m having fun already. ๐Ÿ™‚

Patrick says:

Open on my desktop: 1) text file with story information; character and place names, etc, to refer back to and update as I write. 2) Thesaurus.com 3) The novel itself. 4) Nanowrimo home page. 5)Twitter.

Matilda says:

I’m being a NaNo Rebel this year which sounds so much more exciting then it is. I’m continuing on where I left my novel last year and hoping to maybe even finish the story, which basically is what happens when different cultures and religions clash, with a dash of magic on top of that.
Hope you get well soon and looking forward to your twitter wordsprints! ๐Ÿ™‚

Jessica says:

I’m doing NaNoWriMo for the first time this year and I’m so excited. I’m writing a zombie novel. It’s about a girl named Jenna who works for an agency that kills zombies and she goes undercover at a rival agency to stop them :). I hope you feel better soon and good luck on your novel! ๐Ÿ™‚

Lily says:

Hey Kristina! I’m writing a novel entitled ‘It’s time’ for NaNo, got to 2014 words today! I’ll definitely be at the livestream tomorrow, I was last year! Also, on the top of ‘for the children’ I cut off 13 inches of hair to donate to The Little Princess Fund, which is the british version of Children With Hair Loss

Joe says:

feel better Kristina!!! & caught you tomorrow.

Cassidy says:

Attempting my first year of NaNo. I had decided that i was not going to do it untill 5 pm on Nivember 1st, and I was bored. So yay!
My novel is called Kill Me Again, and its about this 18 yr old girl who dies and is trapped in a sort of limbo. She has all these evil spirits chasing after her. That idea was inspired by dementors.

Jenna says:

Hey Kristina! I just wanted to tell you that a couple of days ago, I almost stopped doing NaNoWriMo. I didn’t write anything for three days straight, and then I listened to your NaNoWriMo song again. It totally inspired me to keep going! I wrote a little bit over 5,000 words today to get back on track ๐Ÿ™‚ thanks for being awesome!

That is so fantastic to hear – congrats on not giving up! I had a year like that once as well.
