Yesterday was the first day of PAX PRIME and I couldn’t be more excited. On my first day I wandered the Expo Hall, signed up for raffles, purchased a few things from the We Love Fine booth that I’m sure you’ll see popping up in future Outfit of the Day posts, demo-ed games, stopped by a variety show at the Triple Door and ended the night with a hilarious nerdy improv show! It was an amazing first day – and although my feet already hurt, I can’t wait to get back down there and do it all again today.

For the first day, I decided to go casual. I wore a super fun Adventure Time shirt I got from TeeFury a while back, and my brand new blue striped shorts from ModCloth. For the record, I got two compliments on those shorts from strangers, and one crazy bus lady who told me to “wear clothes over my underwear next time”. I’m going to say all press is good press on that one…?

Lastly I threw on my old but reliable Steve Madden boots, grabbed my standard convention bag with the emoticon face on the side and strapped my PAX badges onto a My Little Pony lanyard. I felt awesome – and was never once uncomfortable. I plan to dress up for some of the other days, but shorts and a t-shirt was a solid choice for Day 1.

How do you accessorize a plain t-shirt? I’m curious about your tips – because I usually struggle to find ways to make the embarrassing amount of nerdy tees I own work beyond night shirts. Let me know in the comments!

  2. Video: Colors of the Rainbow Tag!

August 28, 2013 ♥ Posted in: Fashion/Beauty, YouTube videos by Kristina Horner

Yesterday I posted my August Favorites video in the form of a “Colors of the Rainbow” tag… basically I picked one thing of each color that I was into this month and compiled them together in this YouTube video for you:

Not only that, but I also created a supplemental Subblime recommendation list that goes into much more detail about each of the products, AND includes a giveaway for this lovely “Part of Your World” eyeshadow palette from The Little Mermaid line at Sephora.

They don’t have any more of the larger Ariel palette unfortunately, but I wanted to let my viewers get in on the Disney makeup collection while part of it are still available! So head on over to Subblime to try and win one, or you can buy it here. Which of the Disney Princess palettes has been your favorite? I heard they’re not doing any more, but if they were, which ones would you want to see next?

  3. August Ipsy Glam Bag Review

August 27, 2013 ♥ Posted in: Fashion/Beauty by Kristina Horner

    IpsyAugust

I got my Ipsy Glam Bag for August, and I love it! I used every single product in my routine today, so figured I would do a write up/review of them, now that I’ve developed my opinions.

First is the Vanilla lip balm from Noya. I’m not going to lie, this was pretty much just lip balm. Maybe I’m a naive lip balm consumer, but it’s all sort of the same to me. I tend to buy more fruity flavors on my own, but I was pleasantly surprised by this vanilla one. I will definitely toss it in my purse and keep using it. Also, a plus, Noya doesn’t test on animals or use preservatives. Hooray!

Next was Lash Booster Mascara from Pixi. I only recently discovered Pixi brand cosmetics, at VidCon actually – Subblime was giving them out to people! I have been very impressed with everything I’ve tried from Pixi so far, and this mascara was no exception. In fact, I think this was my favorite product in this month’s bag. I have really thin eyelashes, but this lash booster mascara made them look fuller than I’ve ever seen them! Will definitely buy again.

I really enjoy trying new facial products, so I was excited to try the Jojoba Charcoal Facial Scrub by Michael Todd True Organics. Right away it kind of freaked me out – the charcoal in the formula makes the scrub itself black – which is a scary thing to rub on your face! It was extremely gentle though, for an exfoliant. Which I really appreciate, as my skin is sensitive and acne prone. I’ll be interested to see if I notice a difference at all in my skin over time, but it feels lovely today.

Moving on, next was the All-In-One Multi-Mineral BB Cream by Pacifica. I’m a little wary of BB Creams (since my skin is so temperamental) but I’ll try anything once. This claimed to be color matching, but it was a little dark for my skin. Also, the tube barely had anything in it, so it was kind of tough to get a good sampling out of it. I’m sure this product is decent, but I’ll probably stick with my current face products.

The final product from this bag was a NYX Blush in Espresso. I wasn’t quite as excited about this one, because I already own a lot of NYX products. I often buy more coral type hues for blush though, so it’s kind of nice to add a more brown tone to my collection. It’s not bad, but again, it’s NYX. Nothing new.

I also got that adorable unicorn themed nail polish in Lime Crime for referring at least two people last month. Thanks guys! If you’re interested in joining Ipsy and getting fun products each month, it’s only $10 and I think it’s totally worth it.

  4. Look #10: Bad Mood Outfit

August 22, 2013 ♥ Posted in: Fashion/Beauty, Outfit of the Day by Kristina Horner

You wouldn’t be human if you didn’t have an absolutely completely awful horrible head achey bad day every now and then. Wednesday (yesterday) was that day for me and superficial or no, sometimes the only cure for a bad mood of this calibre… is new clothes.

    tumblr_mrwd3tMkjS1qbyopio1_500

This outfit makes me happy for a number of reasons. First of all, pattern mixing. Floral print and polka dots are, in my opinion, among the most carefree styles of clothing one can wear, so the combination of the two instantly took my mood from “totally sour” to “slightly less irritable”. Not to mention someone on tumblr referred to these overalls as “coversomes”. Is that a phrase? If not, it needs to be. I love it.

I also used the “pin your hair back in an attempt to hide the fact that you didn’t shower today” technique, which went off without a hitch. Sleeping in braids is the trick to this method, giving your hair a somewhat believable wave-like quality.

Next was the “random bracelets from my dresser” combo, which was part accessory, part potential sacrifice if my day happened to get worse and I needed something to explode. The ricocheting of fake pearls in every direction in a moment of massive frustration is a nice backup plan to have tucked away in the back of your mind as you face your absolutely completely awful horrible head achey bad day.

The last and most important element of my bad mood outfit was my Harry Potter sorting hat necklace. Because even on the worst of days, I know I’ve always got Harry to cheer me up. My necklace was a gift, but I just found this similar one on Amazon.

What are your go-to strategies for your bad days? What silly items of clothing or games or TV shows can make you feel better even during the most stressful times? Let me know in the comments – maybe they’ll help me too.

Update: As it is Thursday now, I feel I should let you all know that I am having a much better day, and the bracelets did not get exploded. They made it back to my jewelry box unscathed.

  5. Disneybound: Cruella de Vil!

August 12, 2013 ♥ Posted in: Fashion/Beauty, Geek Events, Outfit of the Day, Travel by Kristina Horner

While in LA last week, my friends and I attended “Disneyland Day” for VidCon – which is like any other normal day at Disneyland, except the park is swarming with YouTubers. Rather than donning my official gray VidCon tee like many others, my friends and I decided to Disneybound:

    photo (2)

This was my very first time Disneybounding and I decided I wanted to go villain. I chose Cruella de Vil; mostly on account of finding these adorable polka dot shorts. The puppy earrings were actually just white dog earrings I found at Claire’s (by walking in and asking the girl working to “show me whatever dog stuff they had”) that I drew black spots on with a sharpie. I tucked in a slouchy red shirt, grabbed some other black and white accessories and wa-la! If it doesn’t scare you, no evil thing will!

I never got a full picture of all my friends and I in costume, but we had among us a Dumbo, Christopher Robin, Scuttle, The Queen of Hearts and Sophie from Howl’s Moving Castle. I love dressing up, so getting to do so, subtly, on a normal day is something I am all about.

Who should I Disneybound as next? Or, if you’ve done it yourself, show me pictures in the comments section!

  6. Look #4: Legally Blonde Opening Night!

July 28, 2013 ♥ Posted in: Fashion/Beauty, Outfit of the Day by Kristina Horner

    photo (1)

When your best friend is a choreographer, you see a lot of opening nights for various musicals. You also spend a lot of time getting your fingers crushed during big dance numbers, in anticipation that every lift, every turn, every step goes off without a hitch. This was the case on Saturday when I attended the opening for Legally Blonde, the kidstage performance that’s kept me from seeing Eia for most of the last month.

The show was so much fun, though. If you’ve never gotten to see the musical version of Legally Blonde, you’re seriously missing out. It has all the cleverness and heart of the movie, but with show stopping dance numbers, hilarious songs and amazing sparkly costumes around every corner.

My only regret about the whole experience is that I didn’t think to wear pink. Who am I?

    What I’m wearing:

    • Turquoise floral dress from Herberger’s
    • Medium brown cowboy boots from Forever21
    • Funky pink and cream satchel from Wholesale-Dress.net
    • Tortoiseshell sunglasses from Forever21
    • Unicorn necklace sent to me from a fan

What’s your current favorite new musical? Let me know in the comments!

  7. Look #3: Date night at the theatre!

July 27, 2013 ♥ Posted in: Fashion/Beauty, Outfit of the Day by Kristina Horner

    photo

Last night, Joe and I went to see Chicago at Village Theatre here in Seattle. I first fell in love with this show back in middle school when the movie came out, but in all that time (um, let’s actually not talk about how much time has passed since middle school) I never managed to see a live production of the show.

Joe surprised me with tickets this week however, so I threw on my (literal) dancing shoes and away we went. It was a lot of fun; the costumes and choreography were phenomenal and I can guarantee I’m going to have these songs in my head for weeks. If you see me Bob Fosse-ing around at VidCon, you’ll know why.

Anyway, here’s what I was wearing:

    • Funky galaxy dress, thrifted. It has glitter on it!
    • “The Best of Times” heels from ModCloth.com in “Noir”.
    • Black & White purse from Forever21

  8. Nordstrom Anniversary Gift!

July 26, 2013 ♥ Posted in: Fashion/Beauty by Kristina Horner

I recently received a vague email from Nordstrom. I have to say, one of the strangest things about being an online content creator lately is adjusting to the concept of conversing with companies as if they are sentient beings on our level of internet-dom. If you follow @TacoBell on twitter, you know what I’m talking about. Anyway, I got this email in my inbox, and it informed me that Nordstrom likes what I do online and wants to send me a gift in honor of their Anniversary Sale!

I figured hey, I can totally live in a world where people send ME presents for THEIR anniversary. So of course, I accepted.

A mere couple of days later, a box full of goodies appeared at my door:

    photo

    In the box was:

    • Bright pink Nike Free 5.0 running shoes
    • Nail polish in “Mint condition”
    • Hanky panky low rise undies
    • Clear plastic beverage tumbler
    • Canvas beach bag
    • Cutesy magnets

Thanks, Nordstrom! Good luck with the #NSale, and I can’t wait to take these fierce new shoes out on the street! Good thing I’ve been putting off investing in good running shoes! 😉

This weekend is more Job Hunters filming; we’re actually finishing up one of my favorite episodes of the season this Sunday. Only a few more shoot weekends left… so crazy!

I’m curious, since this blog is so new… what kinds of posts are you more looking forward to or hoping to see? I’ve been out of the blogging world for so long that I’m really interested in your opinions!

  9. Look #1: Mustaches & Miniskirts!

July 24, 2013 ♥ Posted in: Fashion/Beauty, Geek Events, Outfit of the Day by Kristina Horner

Hello, and welcome to my first “Look” post! I’ll be posting “Outfit of the Day” entries anytime I wear something particularly fancy, when I’m at important events, or when I go to costume or themed parties. This first post falls into that third category. Last night, my friends and I had a “mustaches and miniskirts” party as a sort of going-away soiree for our friend Kayley. Both mustaches and miniskirts were required of everyone in attendance.

    1000740_4949439265421_1805608671_n

We had a bit of a tough time convincing one of the boys to don his miniskirt, but most people were pretty on board with the whole idea. Especially Gale. We couldn’t get him to take his off (though this may have had something to do with the fact that his stand is much wider than the skirt in question)!

Anyway, the mustache was obtained for free at the LeakyCon mustache world record event, the skirt was a thrift store find and the vest is Forever 21.

What’s the craziest themed party you’ve ever been to?
